I love my planner, but it has taken me awhile to figure out what works for me. I wanted to share a few of the pros and cons of different planner binding systems I tried along the way. If you’re in search of planner peace maybe this list will help you find a little direction.
Coils
- PRO Coils are the most sturdy.
- PRO Erin Condren. Erin Condren is the it-girl planner of the planner community, which means it’s easiest to find Etsy stickers that fit and match the layout perfectly.
- CON It’s not easy to add and remove pages throughout the year. If you want to add fitness tracking pages or holiday planning pages, you’re stuck with getting a new planner. (Wait. Why was this a con?)
Binders
- PRO It’s easy to add and remove pages whenever you want. As an added bonus, there are a lot of cute inserts on Etsy for every binder planner size.
- PRO Pockets! It’s so awesome to be able to keep extra cute paperclips, sticky notes and stickers in your planner at all times.
- CON Binders are bulky. I like to leave my planner open on my desk while I’m working so I can easily glance at my to-do list. An A5 binder that’s big enough for my planning needs is too bulky to do that comfortably. Smaller binders are less bulky, but also have less room for planning.
Discs
- PRO It’s easy to add and remove pages whenever you want.
- PRO Me and My Big Ideas is constantly coming out with new product lines that go with their disc-bound planner, The Happy Planner. Pocket pages for adding photos and journaling cards to your planner sealed the deal for me.
- CON Discs are the least sturdy. I use my planner pretty much all day everyday. I’m not super careful with it, and I’ve never had a problem with the durability of the discs. However, I have heard a few (very few) people say they’ve had issues.

Been an EC planner for years. Love this planner until this yesr. Cover keeps falling off, and I am in Canada so shipping is now ad much as the planner. Bought a Happy Planner at Micheal’s at 1/2 price. Made my own pages until July. I love how I can add anything I wish including plastic pages and laminated items. Large farm and a large family. Finally found planner piece.
I switched to the Happy Planner from EC, too! I love it!
